The risk of the everything app

Notion recently introduced charts. A much-requested feature.

But it made me wonder—how difficult is it to be a product manager at Notion?

At its core, Notion is a beautifully designed database. That's it.
But it's framed in different ways: a wiki, a task manager, a journal. And it's used in even more wild ways by its users.

That’s the challenge.

When your app can do anything, users start to expect everything.
A growing user base means growing expectations.
More hopes, more requests, more uses.

At some point, you can’t keep up.

The bigger it gets, the more it fractures.
The wave of demand collapses under its own weight.
And smaller, more focused tools rise to take its place.

Until one of them grows too big.

And the cycle starts again.
