Remarkably low prices of copilots

This weeks hype is all about Cursor’s new composer feature. Cursor is just an example of a new product category called ‘co-pilots’. Generative AI assistants that link up to your work, be it email, document writing or coding.

GitHub Copilot, Cursor and Supermaven are a few copilots for code. And rapidly becoming more and more advanced. They drastically change what it means to be a developer.

English is the programming language of the future

While very cool tech, one one thing strikes me as truly remarkable; their pricing.

All priced at around 20 dollars per month. For a full-time available junior developer, who’s rapidly becoming a medior or even senior developer.

How will that change the market for services around developers? Agencies, IT companies, or even in-house software development teams. I’m sure there will still be demand for the skills of a good software engineer. The skill of problem solving and creative thinking.

But the old-fashioned factory/agency business model of hourly invoiced (junior) developers, of offshore development, is rapidly becoming irrelevant.
