AI is a catch-all term

Just like every piece of software is now an “app” (as the meme above illustrates), AI is becoming the catch-all term for anything involving smart technology.

But when we talk about AI, what we usually mean are large language models (LLMs)—tools like ChatGPT, which have captured the public imagination.

Yet, AI is more than just LLMs. It includes machine learning models, simulations, and a variety of other tools.

LLMs might be great at understanding and generating language. But they fall short on tasks involving numbers or heavy computations. They require too much processing power for tasks they weren’t designed to solve.

As AI grows, it runs the risk of making older, legacy tools redundant. But we must remember: not everything in AI is as magical as it seems.
